Contrary to popular belief, the use of butterfly wings in jewelry did not originate in the late Victorian era as some surmise.

In fact, it wasn't until the 1924 British Empire Exhibition when jeweler Thomas L. Mott showcased his delicate butterfly wing creations that this lepidoptera craze took flight. 

Prized for its stunning metallic blue-black iridescence, the Morpho butterfly was the jeweler's wing of choice. Native to South America, these beautiful creatures were transported to England and raised on farms for the sole purpose of jewelry production (a practice that still takes place today in a slightly more ethical sense). 

One look at this stunning necklace and it is easy to see how one could get enchanted by its beauty. The way the wing shimmers in the light is almost hypnotic. 

This lovely piece is made in England and set in brilliant sterling silver with a lovely flower bail. While it has all of the telltale signs of a Thomas Mott piece, it does not have his maker's mark or patent numbers, so we cannot attribute it to him with certainty. 

Still, it is quite the spectacular piece and it comes on its original deco era chain.
